Electronic cigarettes have continued to gain more popularity among the youths, former and current smokers. This popularity is as a result of their being perceived to be a healthier alternative to the ordinary conventional cigarettes. In the past, scientist thought that the chemicals found in cigarette smoke were the primary reasons leading to the confrontational health effects, but several developing scientific research data inclusive of this study did prove the perception wrong. The burning of vapors from an e-cigarette causes the cells to release inflammatory proteins. These inflammatory proteins result in aggravate stress from within the cells; leading to damage that could lead to certain oral diseases. The degree of injury to the gums and oral cavity is determined by how much and how often one smokes e-cigarettes.

In the study where 3D human, non-smoker tissues of the gum were exposed to the vapors of e-cigarettes, it was found that the flavoring chemicals did play a great role in the destruction of cells in the mouth. Through the study, it was discovered that some flavors made the damage to the cells even worse compared to others. E-cigarettes contain nicotine which contributes to gum disease.

Many of the commonly used e-cigarettes are composed of a battery, a heating apparatus, and a cartridge to hold the liquid. The components of the liquid are nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. The battery powers the device to heat up the liquid contained in the cartridge into a mister that the smoker inhales.

According to Oncotarget, a large number of the people using the e-cigar are youths who are not aware of its harmful effects. Many people do not know that the e-cigarettes are dangerous because very little research has been conducted on them. The study carried out by Oncotarget revealed that the cigars are very common among the high school student in the United States. Awareness of the effects of the e-cigarettes should be made to prevent more damage.
