Avaaz: Taking Global Campaigns to Another Level

Avaaz is an online activist platform that has a network of millions of people all around the globe. “Avaaz” means “voice” in various European, and Asian dialects. Launched back in 2007, the online community has had one important mission ever since: to close the gap between humanity, and to work towards the world everyone wants.

The community was established by Res Publica and MoveOn.Org, with the main aim of promoting democracy, and good governance. The community’s leadership currently vests in its President, and CEO, Ricken Patel.

Through Avaaz, people all over the world, from all walks of life, race, and religion have found a voice. The community has empowered them to take action against pressing issues that affect them, including politics, religion, climate change, and even poverty. Apart from taking action on issues that affect them on an international level, people across the globe can also demand accountability from their national leaders. The platform has been used to fight corruption, and to demand better services on a national level.

How Does Avaaz Work?

Avaaz relies on the goodwill of people to run its activities. The community comprises volunteers, who not only organize campaigns, but they also sign petitions. The volunteers also lobby governments, and they organize events where they discuss important global issues. Being part of the community is not as difficult as some may presume. Thanks to the internet, all you need is to sign up, and join Avaaz from wherever you are.

In order to promote accountability, Avaaz is not funded by governments. They work independently to ensure that they remain transparent, and trustworthy. In fact, since 2009, Avaaz has not accepted funding, or donations, from corporations or organizations. Members donate to the community, and they are in charge of suggesting campaigns.
